🎾 Unlock 10x Product Development Research with ChatGPT: Master Customer Research, Build High-Performing Teams, and Discover New Ideas

This is Sunday 1-1-2-3 with George.

Each week, you get an easy-to-read breakdown of the latest ideas in product development, with a dash of humor to keep things interesting.

It’s like if Marty Cagan was doing stand-up comedy.

Today we have:

  • How To Use ChatGPT To Do Customer Research

  • How To Build New Communities of Practice

  • How To Build a Super-high Performing Engineering Team

  • See/Do Document: A Simple Planning Tool for Complex Product Design

📚 Use ChatGPT To Do Customer Research

ChatGPT… My Evernote is full of prompts and good (or bad; see below) conversations with Baby Skynet.

Yes, it can lie pretty convincingly, too.

One thing it’s great at, though, is categorizing and summarizing.

Those things take the longest and are the most tedious when doing research.

Naturally, folks made a tutorial:

I'm saying goodbye to tedious customer research. I wrote up a guide on how you can streamline your research process with ChatGPT. The best part? You can 2x your output right now. - No experience needed - Input prompts available - Generate ideas fast! Check it out below! ⚡️

Apparently, even the JTBD Gods are playing around with it:

Now, you can 10x your research with it too.

P.S. Just remember to remove any PII, and be ethical. Don’t be like that CEO who decided to cut costs by getting ChatGPT to provide mental health support - to real people. 😅

We provided mental health support to about 4,000 people — using GPT-3. Here’s what happened 👇

👀 How To Find New Ideas

Look, I know you think ideas don’t matter; it’s the [insert blank] that matters.

But I think it’s not the quality, it’s the quantity that counts. You need more of the good kind of ideas and less of the kind of ideas that other people have.

Here’s how:

🍪 Quick Bites

How To Build New Communities of Practice Don’t force them. 7 principles for building communities (inside your organization or for your products)

How To Build a Super-high Performing Engineering Team Time to set up "rubber duck" Slack channels to live stream the thought process when problem-solving. More great advice here.

See/Do Document: A Simple Planning Tool for Complex Product Design. Prototype even quicker by answering the question, “What can the user see?” and “What can the user do?” (full details in the post)

Who's George?

It’s me

I’m an underdog product manager.

Product management in New Zealand (where I live) is still a relatively immature discipline. I also came into it late via data science and UX. I may be older than others, but I often feel like a rookie.

To become better at my craft, I learn and explore new ideas relentlessly.

Then I share high-quality, tried-and-true ideas that can be used right away.

How I can help you:

  • If you’re learning about product as a cross-functional leader, I’ve compiled my best actionable finds in prodmgmt.world.

  • Get some help via prodmgmt.help. People ask about How to prioritise, How to do market research, how to work with engineers, how to go from a service to a product, how to develop a deep coherent product strategy, what books to read and courses to take on product topics & design systems product management.

see you next week.

— George.
